The Prophet
 
 
 
 
The third principal office in Israel is that of the prophet. As we will see, prophets have the duty of ‘bringing forth’ the things of YHWH, and making them known to His people Israel. Amos even tells us that YHWH does nothing that would impact His people Israel without first revealing it to His servants the prophets.
 
Amos 3:7
7 Surely YHWH Elohim does nothing unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.
 
YHWH’s prophets, of course, do not keep these things to themselves, but they reveal them to His people. They are called to be watchmen, whose duty it is to warn His people to turn and come closer to Him.
 
Yehezqel (Ezekiel) 3:17-19
17 "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me:
18 When I say to the wicked, 'You shall surely die,' and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand.
19 Yet, if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul.
 
Scripture does give us examples of those who use their YHWH-given gifts for the wrong reasons; but if any man is called to bring forth the words of YHWH he would do well not to charge for them (or to charge no more than his cost), for YHWH holds His servants accountable to relate His things to His people.
 
There are two basic types of ‘things’ YHWH wants His prophets to relate to the people:
 
1. Predictions (foretelling); and
2. YHWH’s truths and insights (forth-telling).
 
While the ability to prophecy is a gift, it also has to be developed. The way to do that is for the prophet to take his thoughts into captivity (i.e., get his thoughts out of the way) and to breathe in accordance with the Ruach HaQodesh (the Set-apart Spirit, or the Set-apart Breath). When a prophet breathes in this way, and does not hold back the things YHWH says to him, then YHWH can speak through him as He wills.
 
Qorintim Bet (2nd Corinthians) 10:3-6
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh.
4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in Elohim for pulling down strongholds,
5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of Elohim, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Messiah,
6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.
 
There can be a learning curve involved in figuring out what comes from YHWH, and what comes from one’s own thoughts; but once one has learned how to ‘bring one’s thoughts into captivity to the obedience of the Messiah’, one can then focus on hearing YHWH’s Still Small Voice.
 
Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 30:20-21
20 And though YHWH gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your teachers will not be moved into a corner anymore, but your eyes shall see your teachers.
21 Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, "This is the way, walk in it," whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.”
 
Taking one’s thoughts into captivity is a very simple yet powerful spiritual discipline that all of us would do well to practice continually, even as the Apostle Shaul counsels us all to pursue prophecy.
 
Qorintim Aleph (1st Corinthians) 14:1
14 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
 
The reason prophecy is such a desirable gift is that in order to prophesy, we must ‘get ourselves out of the way’, and pay constant attention to YHWH. This is a highly beneficial thing in any believer’s spiritual walk.
 
There are different kinds of prophecy. One of the most powerful is when YHWH puts His words in our mouths and tells us exactly what to say, as He did with the Prophet Jeremiah.
 
Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 1:9-10
9 Then YHWH put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and YHWH said to me: "Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.”
 
YHWH is so powerful that if He wills, He can even put words in the mouths of animals.
 
Bemidbar (Numbers) 22:28
28 Then YHWH opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, "What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”
 
YHWH can also send His Spirit (or Breath) upon us, as He did with King Shaul and his messengers (below). When King Shaul and his messengers came into the presence of Shemuel they were transformed, and they also prophesied (perhaps because YHWH’s Spirit on Shemuel was so strong that it also affected them). Yet because they did not later practice or develop the gift of prophecy (as King David did), it was only a temporary thing for them.
 
Shemuel Aleph (1st Samuel) 19:20-24
20 Then Shaul sent messengers to take David. And when they saw the group of prophets prophesying, and Shemuel standing as leader over them, the Spirit of Elohim came upon the messengers of Shaul, and they also prophesied.
21 And when Shaul was told, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. Then Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also.
22 Then he also went to Ramah, and came to the great well that is at Sechu.  So he asked, and said, "Where are Shemuel and David?" And someone said, "Indeed they are at Naioth in Ramah."
23 So he went there to Naioth in Ramah.  Then the Spirit of Elohim was upon him also, and he went on and prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah.
24 And he also stripped off his clothes and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Therefore they say, "Is Shaul also among the prophets?"
 
Not all prophets take off their clothes. Another level of prophecy is where a prophet hears what YHWH wants said, even though YHWH has not dictated the words. Again this requires careful listening for His voice.
 
Melachim Aleph (1st Kings) 17:13-16
13 And Eliyahu said to her, "Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son.
14 For thus says YHWH Elohim of Israel: 'The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day YHWH sends rain on the earth.'"
15 So she went away and did according to the word of Eliyahu; and she and he and her household ate for many days.
16 The bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry, according to the word of YHWH which He spoke by Eliyahu.
 
We can also bring forth the things of YHWH’s Spirit by speaking in tongues. While this is a genuine gift, it is also one of the gifts most easily counterfeited by Satan. Therefore, we will discuss this in some detail, so we can learn the difference between the true gift and the counterfeits.
 
Isaiah tells us that YHWH would speak to His people with ‘stammering lips and another tongue’; and that this would cause the weary to rest (in the Spirit), and it would also refresh those who understood, because it was a sign that they were filled with the Spirit.
 
Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 28:11-12
11 For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people,
12 To whom He said, "This is the rest with which you may cause the weary to rest," and, "This is the refreshing"; yet they would not hear.
 
The most famous passage regarding speaking in tongues is found in Acts Chapter Two, when the Spirit was poured out on the faithful who had come up to Jerusalem for the Feast of Pentecost.
 
Ma’asei (Acts) 2:1-13
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Set-apart Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.
6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.
7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans?
8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?
9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,
11 Cretans and Arabs — we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of Elohim."
12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "Whatever could this mean?"
13 Others mocking said, "They are full of new wine.”
 
In this passage, we see the following things:
 
  1. A divided tongue (as of fire) was given upon each of the disciples’ heads (Verse three);
  2. The disciples began to speak in tongues other than their native Hebrew and/or Aramaic (verse four); and
  3. Those from other lands were miraculously given the gift of interpretation on a wide-spread scale, so that they were able to hear the Good News in their own native languages (verses six through eleven); and thus the message was imparted.
  4. The purpose of the miracle was to impart a message.
 
This passage shows us that tongues is a gift that can happen when people are first filled with the Spirit. It also shows us that a special gift can take place, where tongues are used to impart a Scriptural message (called ‘edification’ later in Scripture).
 
The gift of tongues was also given to Cornelius (and those with him), in a similar fashion:
 
Ma’asei (Acts) 10:44-48
While Kefa (Peter) was still speaking these words, the Set-apart Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word.
45 And those of the Circumcision who believed (i.e. believing Pharisees) were astonished, as many as came with Kefa, because the gift of the Set-apart Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles (the Ephraimites) also.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify Elohim. Then Kefa answered,
47 "Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be immersed who have received the Set-apart Spirit, just as we have?"
48 And he commanded them to be immersed in the name of YHWH. Then they asked him to stay a few days.
 
In this passage, we see that:
 
  1. Those who were newly saved
  2. spoke in ‘tongues;’ and
  3. They magnified (or glorified) Elohim.
 
Some key differences between this passage and Acts Chapter Two is that:
 
  1. No tongue of flame alighted on anyone’s head; and
  2. The purpose of the tongues here was not to impart the Good News, but rather it signaled the indwelling of the Spirit.
 
Then in Acts Chapter Nineteen we read that the gift of prophecy was given concurrent with the gift of speaking in tongues:
 
Ma’asei (Acts) 19:5-7
When they heard this, they were immersed in the name of the Master Yeshua.
6 And when Shaul had laid hands on them, the Set-apart Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
7 Now the men were about twelve in all.
 
In this passage, we are told that once the Set-apart Spirit came upon them, they:
 
  1. Spoke in tongues; and
  2. Prophesied.
 
Then in First Corinthians Chapters Twelve through Fourteen, the Apostle Shaul shows us that these gifts are interrelated, as speaking in tongues is usually takes place when one is first indwelt by the Spirit (or by those who have not gone on to prophesy).
 
Shaul tells us that we should understand spiritual gifts:
 
Qorintim Aleph (1st Corinthians) Twelve
1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:
 
Even though it is the same spirit, there are diversities of spiritual gifts.
 
4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
 
Even though we have the same Spirit, YHWH gives us all different gifts. This will be important to understand later, when we talk about Mark 16:9-20.
 
8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,
10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
 
‘Tongues’ is a beginner’s gift. When the Spirit first dwells inside one, one may give utterance to the things one feels, and this may come out as ‘tongues’ (i.e., as babble). However, we should continue onward towards prophesying, which calls for making these utterances intelligible. That way, edification can take place.
 
It is so important for us to understand that even though we are all members of the same Body we all have different gifts, that Shaul tells us again.
 
27 Now you are the Body of Messiah, and members individually.
28 And Elohim has appointed these in the assembly: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.
29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles?
30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
 
Then in First Corinthians Thirteen, Shaul eloquently tells us that Love (KJV: charity) is the greatest gift of all. He tells us that Love is a greater spiritual gift even than prophecy:
 
1 Corinthians 13
1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.
 
Without love, none of the other spiritual gifts mean anything. However, then Shaul says something very curious. He tells us that when that which is perfect has come, that which is partial vanishes.
 
8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
 
This passage is sometimes misunderstood to mean that when we begin to love, we cease to prophesy; as if love puts an end to all prophecy. This, however, cannot be correct, because the Apostles had love, and they prophesied. Therefore, what is the meaning of this passage? We will see in a moment.
 
Next Shaul tells us that even if we have love, we should still desire to prophesy. He also tells us that it is much better to prophesy than to speak in a tongue.
 
Qorintim Aleph (1st Corinthians) 14
1 Pursue love; and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy;
2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to Elohim, for no one understands him; but in the spirit he speaks (only) mysteries.
 
The reason prophesying is better than speaking in tongues is that tongues are a precursor to prophesying. Tongues are but a first step in the progression towards one’s ability to bring forth the things of the Spirit.
 
Qorintim Aleph (1st Corinthians) 14
26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation (i.e. Elohim gives you something to share).
Let all things be done for edification:
27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret.
28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in the assembly, and let him speak to himself and to Elohim.
 
Since not everyone has the gift of interpretation,  Shaul tells us that if no one is present to interpret another’s tongue, then it would be better for the assembly as a whole if the one speaking in tongues would just groan silently in the Spirit (not aloud).
 
The reason one should not speak in tongues before the assembly without an interpreter being present is that the whole reason for speaking in the assembly is to bring edification to others. If there is no interpreter there will be no edification; and if there will not be any edification then it would be better for the people if one did not take up precious assembly time (but allowed someone else talk, instead).
 
Even when one prophesies (i.e., brings forth the things of the Spirit in an intelligible fashion) things must still be done in an orderly way. Therefore Shaul tells us:

29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge;
30 But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent.
31 For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be encouraged.
32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
 
Since the purpose of speaking in the assembly is to edify the Body, even those who prophesy should take turns. Further, if someone is prophesying and another is given a revelation, then all present should honor the movement of the Spirit by being quiet, allowing the one who has been given the revelation enough time to speak what the Spirit has revealed. When all of this is done with love, and in the right Spirit, all of this can take place in a very loving, orderly way.
 
The reason we are told that the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets is that the prophets are able to control themselves, if they want to.
 
Qorintim Aleph (1st Corinthians) 14
33 For Elohim is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints.
 
Here is the litmus-test of a well-run assembly: That all those to whom Elohim genuinely gave something of value to share were able to share it; and still there is peace, happiness, goodwill, and order.

Shaul then concludes by saying that while prophecy is a much better gift than mere tongues (since it edifies), one must not forbid the people to speak in tongues (since it is part of their learning and spiritual progression):
 
Qorintim Aleph (1st Corinthians) 14
39 Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy; but do not forbid to speak with tongues.
 
Only:
 
40 Let all things be done decently, and in order.
 
It is important that people be encouraged to develop their spiritual gifts. If they only speak in tongues, rather than prophesying, they should be encouraged to do so. However, they should also understand that Tongues is only a beginner’s means of bringing forth the things of the Spirit (similar to baby talk). It is highly appropriate for new believers, but not as much for those who have been saved for a while. They should be encouraged, but in an orderly way, and with an understanding that it is the least of the signs of the indwelling of the Spirit.
 
Qorintim Aleph (1st Corinthians) 14
18 I thank my Elohim I speak with tongues more than you all;
19 yet in the assembly I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a(n un-interpreted) tongue.
 
With this understanding, now let us look at the other remaining reference to Tongues in the New Covenant. 
 
Marqaus (Mark) 16:15-18
15 "Go into all the world and preach the Good News to every creature. 
16 He who believes and is immersed will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 
17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;
18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."
 
This passage tells us that those who believe will speak with new tongues; and that they will take up serpents; and that if they drink poison, it will not make them sick. The way the language reads, these are made to seem as if they are almost ‘litmus tests’ of salvation. However, this would conflict with First Corinthians Chapters 12-14, where Shaul tells us several times that even though we are all of the same Body, we have different gifts.
 
Metzger’s Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament (page 102) tells us that Mark 16:9-20 is not present in either of the two oldest known Greek manuscripts. It is also missing from the Old Latin Codex, the Sinai Syriac manuscript, from about one hundred Armenian manuscripts, as well as the two oldest Gregorian manuscripts (circa CE 897 and 913).
 
Metzger also reports that both Origen and Clement of Alexandria appear to have understood that Mark Chapter Sixteen ended with verse 8. Also, the Church Fathers Eusebius and Jerome attested that verses 9-20 were absent from almost all of the Greek manuscripts they knew of [Metzger’s Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament, Bruce M. Metzger, page 102, 1971/2001]. 
 
Many scholars feel that Mark 19:6-20 is illegitimate, and that it does not belong in Scripture; and this author agrees. We are told in several places that we are not to add to Scripture (e.g., Deuteronomy 12:32): and for this reason, Mark 16:9-20 does not belong.
 
While prophecy is a gift that YHWH can give anyone, there is still a special kingdom role in Scripture for ‘the’ prophet. Kings sometimes had prophets through which YHWH seemed to communicate very well. Perhaps the most famous example of this is Nathan.
 
Shemuel Bet (2nd Samuel) 12:1
12 Then YHWH sent Nathan to David. And he came to him, and said to him: "There were two men in one city, one rich and the other poor….”
 
The kings of Judah were somewhat better at listening to their prophets than the kings of Ephraim, who (like today) typically ignored the true prophets, in favor of those who told them what they wanted to hear.
 
Melachim Aleph (1st Kings) 22:7-8
7 And Jehoshaphat said, "Is there not still a prophet of YHWH here, that we may inquire of Him?"
8 So the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "There is still one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may inquire of YHWH; but I hate him, because he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil." And Jehoshaphat said, "Let not the king say such things!"
 
The thing the northern kings (and even the Ephraimite people) often seemed to miss is that a prophet is not supposed to speak his own words. His job is to put his own words aside, so as to hear and speak YHWH’s words. Men, of course, hate this, because YHWH’s ways oftentimes seem too hard for us. We do not like hearing the truth, so we stop up our ears.
 
As is the saying of our forefathers, “You have to be a little bit crazy to want to be a prophet.” It may sound glamorous to be a prophet, but in reality it just means a lot of difficult, unglamorous, unrewarded work. Often it means persecution.
 
Melachim Aleph (1st Kings) 18:4
4 For so it was, while Jezebel massacred the prophets of YHWH, that Ovadyah had taken one hundred prophets and hidden them, fifty to a cave, and had fed them with bread and water.)
 
In order to get the point across to His people, YHWH often asks His prophets to do unusual things. For example, YHWH commanded Ezekiel do things as a witness against the House of Israel, even though they were already in the Dispersion.
 
Yehezqel (Ezekiel) 4:4-5
4 "Lie also on your left side, and lay the iniquity of the House of Israel upon it. According to the number of the days that you lie on it, you shall bear their iniquity.
5 For I have laid on you the years of their iniquity, according to the number of the days, three hundred and ninety days; so you shall bear the iniquity of the House of Israel.”
 
For their loyalty, YHWH sometimes even commands the prophets to lose those who are dear to them.
 
Yehezqel (Ezekiel) 24:15-23
15 Also the word of YHWH came to me, saying,
16 "Son of man, behold, I take away from you the desire of your eyes with one stroke; yet you shall neither mourn nor weep, nor shall your tears run down.
17 Sigh in silence, make no mourning for the dead; bind your turban on your head, and put your sandals on your feet; do not cover your lips, and do not eat man's bread of sorrow."
18 So I spoke to the people in the morning, and at evening my wife died; and the next morning I did as I was commanded.
19 And the people said to me, "Will you not tell us what these things signify to us, that you behave so?"
20 Then I answered them, "The word of YHWH came to me, saying,
21 'Speak to the house of Israel, "Thus says YHWH Elohim: 'Behold, I will profane My sanctuary, your arrogant boast, the desire of your eyes, the delight of your soul; and your sons and daughters whom you left behind shall fall by the sword.
22 And you shall do as I have done; you shall not cover your lips nor eat man's bread of sorrow.
23 Your turbans shall be on your heads and your sandals on your feet; you shall neither mourn nor weep, but you shall pine away in your iniquities and mourn with one another.”
 
Prophets are almost always misunderstood. Moshe (Moses) was more afflicted than any man until Yeshua, Yochanan HaMatbil (John the Baptist) was slain with the sword, and the Prophet Isaiah was sawn in two.
 
Ivrim (Hebrews) 11:36-38
36 Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment.
37 They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword.  They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented — 
38 of whom the world was not worthy.  They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth.
 
YHWH can even command His prophets to do things that might otherwise be against the written Torah.
 
Hoshea (Hosea) 3:1
3 Then YHWH said to me, "Go again, love a woman who is loved by a lover and is committing adultery, just like the love of YHWH for the children of Israel, who look to other elohim (g-ds) and love the raisin cakes of the pagans.”
 
Quite often, the closer a prophet draws to YHWH the harder and more challenging his trials will become to bear, and the less the majority of the people will understand him. Yet while these things are unpleasant they give YHWH so much the greater glory, for why would anyone go through such trials were it not for his faith, and his fear of the living Elohim?
 
Mattithyahu (Matthew) 10:28
28 “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
